Have you ever had the experience to feel or witness the joy of being a mother as their baby kicks for the first time? It's quite the exciting feeling, making you think twice about being agitated over the moans and groans that can come along with pregnancy. When you think about the joyful moments that come day by day, do they make you forget about the challenges you face, trials that are coming daster than you'd like? They may not make you forget completely, but they do help us to value our lives, experiencing the goodness of God through these joyous times. God shows us the joy of life through the kicking of an unborn baby, to the smile of a friend in passing. We just need to make sure we take the time to see them, really experiencing the fullness of the life God has given us. Where do you see the joy?
Today's Gospel states:'In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechari'ah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son' (Luke 1:39-57).
Today's reading talks about how Elizabeth blesses Mary as she approaches, feeling her baby leap within her as Mary comes near. The kicking of a child is a wonderful feeling in it's own, but as Mary approaches, it intensifies, leaping for joy as Mary comes closer, signifying an even greater joy to come, the baby Jesus. Though we may go through tough times, you can't let life become depressing and dull, especially when there are so many joyful moments passing you by. You may not even notice them. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you take in the moments of joy.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me through tough trials in my life. Help me to focus on the joyful times you bring to my life.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
