Are you the type of person who loves to go home after a long day and curl up on the couch, getting comfy under blankets and turning on a good show? It's definitely a good way to end a long, tiring day. What if you were offered the chance to see a friend last minute, changing your plans? Would you do it, would you get out of your comfort zone to see a friend, to put yourself out there a bit more? If you're the type of person who needs to be around others to feel fulfilled, you'd probably be jumping at the chance. However, in our modern society where we're always attached to others through technology, we really start pulling away from really connecting. Many of us would take the lazy approach and say not tonight, turning the friend down. If this were always your go-to response, you may not have a big social circle, and may stay within your own comfort zone, relying on just the few within your inner circle. Today is the day that God is calling you to get up, step out, and meet someone new, embrace your faith and try to really reach those who may need to have a one-on-one discussion on what really matters. If you don't take that time to step out, to listen to God's call of discipleship, someone else may miss the chance to really come to know God. Are you letting your own walls confine you in one place?
Today's Gospel states:'And he arose and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they besought him for her. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she rose and served them. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many, crying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. And when it was day he departed and went into a lonely place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them; but he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose." And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea' (Luke 4:38-44).
Today's reading talks about how we need to be ready to go out and preach the good news. We can't just stay comfortable, as nice as it is to know everyone around you and have a regular routine. If we were to always just stay in our current place of comfort, we wouldn't really get very far in life. We wouldn't grow, make mistakes, have successes, and move on to really achieve anything. God calls us as a part of our mission in life to be disciples within the world, to help others find Him. In order to do this, it's time for us to get up, get out and take a risk or two meeting new people and extend ourselves to the world. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you learn to step out of your comfort zone as a disciple to reach those around you.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know Your will for my life. Guide me to where You are leading me, and help me to step out of my comfort zone so that I can better do Your will.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
