Do you have any traditions in your family that you hold dear to your heart? They could be special, influencing you as you grow up. Some may even call these traditions sacred. You wouldn't want to give them up right? They would be something you look forward to each year. When it comes to reading God's sacred Scripture, we should reach that same excitement, the same joy as these traditions we've had growing up, and even reach a higher form of joy. Think about it, this is God's Word for us, how to live a good life, passed down for generations. What could be more Sacred?
Today's Gospel states:'And he went down to Caper'na-um, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath; and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, "Ah! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. And they were all amazed and said to one another, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." And reports of him went out into every place in the surrounding region' (Luke 4:31-37).
Today's reading talks about God's word, and how sacred it is. The people don't understand just how powerful and full of truth Jesus' words are for them to hear. So often, we are the same, sitting in mass and not really paying attention to the information being passed to us through the readings, letting our Bible collect dust at home. We don't see the value in the sacred word God has for us. I've recently tried to start spending more time reflecting on the Scripture readings of the day, reading them through as I have breakfast. How are you taking steps to hear God's Word? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you value His sacred Word given to you.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know You more through hearing and reading Your sacred Word. Help me to value the words being given to me and to really pay attention to how You are trying to guide me through them.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
