Have you ever seen the movie Hercules? It's one of my favourites, showing the life of a man who really needs to go the distance to prove his worth, in order to be reunited with the gods. In the end, it's really the power of love that he feels for Meg as he saves her life, that really helps him see what is important in life, what makes one really worthy. Many of our Disney movies relay this message in some form, amongst battles, trials and musical numbers. They relay the message to us that being a good person at heart, and going the distance to be a person of love is of primary importance for us. God shows us this message time and time again, just looking at the First Commandment, to love the Lord your God with all your heart. Think about it, do you go the distance to show others how you love?
Today's Gospel states:'"You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you' (Matthew 5:38-42).
Today's reading talks about how we need to learn to turn the other cheek, to go beyond what is expected of us in a loving manner. Now Jesus isn't literally telling us to let someone keep hitting us, that's not the point. The point is that it can take a number of attempts to get someone to see God in their life, to see God through us. However, we need to keep trying our hardest and really go thw distance to show God's love through us, even through challenges we may face. We may not have the strength of Hercules, but we have God by our side, a strength much more powerful. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you to share His love with the world.
Today we pray:
Thank You for showing me what it means to be a person of love through Jesus, Your Son. Guide me towards better being an example of Your love for you the world.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
