Are you a servant? Or are you a master? We often take on both of these roles in our lives, whether it's role playing as children, working at a job that deals with customer service, being a parent. There are many ways that we take on the role of a servant, where we do everything in our power to help someone, to cater to their needs. If you've ever helped someone who's had the flu before, you know how demanding a servant's help is. When it comes to being a master, we only touch on this role after growing through experience, a promotion in a job to a lead position, becoming a parent, a teacher. Even in these positions, though we are more educated, there are still times where we take on a servant role in order to help others to grow in wisdom. God wants us to be the servant, as we'll never be able to truly understand everything He has planned, but that's not a bad thing. God is calling each of us to grow in our own faith, through helping guide others into His life and love.
Today's Gospel states:'Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, `He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me"' (John 13:16-20).
Today's reading talks about how we need to be humble servants of God, disciples for the world. Jesus talks about his own experience of following God's will, coming to show us the way to life. He shows us that we can gain so much through being people of God, following His will and being the best servants we can for the world. What areas in your life right now do you take on a role of a servant? Do you embrace this role with joy? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you embrace the role of a servant to best bring love to the world.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to see that the role of a servant is ever so important in the world. Help me to happily embrace this role and share Your love to all the world.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
