Have you ever been a part of a sports team? What is involved? There's the training, both individually and as a part of the group. You need to keep in good shape, eat healthy and practice. Practice as a team is key, especially if you need to work on strategy and making improvements. Think of the Catholic faith as being a part of a team. You have one worldwide community, joining together to better the world through God's Word, and at the centre of it all is the Eucharist, Jesus. We need to work on ourselves individually, on our spiritual lives and our connection to God, but also with those around us as a whole.
Today's Psalm states:'Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful! Let Israel be glad in his Maker, let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with timbrel and lyre! For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory. Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, to execute on them the judgment written! This is glory for all his faithful ones. Praise the LORD!' (Psalms 149:1-6, 9).
God brings us as a people together, and with Him, we are made whole. Today's Psalm tells us that we need to praise, to rejoice, and to be grateful that God brings glory to each of us, and to all of us. There is something special about being gathered as one body for mass, and then each going up to embrace our faith in receiving the Eucharist. We should praise His name with dancing. Take some time today to reflect on where you can focus better on your own prayer life, and also where you can help those in your community. Be involved in your faith!
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Bishops' a prayer for being called to witness:
Gracious and merciful God,
we pray that through the Holy Spirit
all Catholics may hear the call of the New Evangelization
and seek a deeper relationship with your Son, Jesus.
that the New Evangelization
will renew the Church,
inspiring all Catholics to “go forth and make disciples of all nations”
and transform society through the power of the Gospel.
for all members of the Church,
that we heed the words of Christ
—“do not be afraid”—
and strengthened by the Holy Spirit’s gift of courage,
give witness to the Gospel
and share our faith with others.
that we may become
like the father of the prodigal son
—filled with compassion
for our missing brothers and sisters—
and run to embrace them upon their return.
that all people
yearning to know Christ
and the Church
may encounter him through the faithful
who witness to his love in their lives.
Loving God, our Father,
to become witnesses
to the saving grace of your Son,
Jesus, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
