What's Your Burden?

September 21, 2017

|

What is it that God is calling you to do, to be? Have you ever seen The Lord of the Rings? In this story, there is a young Hobbit, Frodo, who is given a burden, a ring. With this ring, he can achieve power, or choose to rid the world of it, and in doing so, rid the world of evil. At first, he is scared of this task, unable to face it alone, and so the Fellowship is created, men who help defend him and help him on his journey. However, as the story goes on, they become separated. It is he and Sam who remain, travelling to the mountain. Think about this from a religious perspective. It was Frodo's burden, he had to be the one to rid the world of this evil. However, there were others with different tasks, equally important, who came to help him as well. For us, we each have a task or challenge to live out, each unique and challenging. However, we all have someone to support us along the way, people who also have their own tasks, but are part of this one world of faith.

Today's First Reading states:'I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ' (Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13).

This reading tells us that we need to live a worthy life, one eager and ready to be lead by the Spirit, but God's calling. While each of us has one mission to better ourselves and serve as disciples, we are all part of a whole, a communion that works together to bring about the goodness of God, like Frodo and the Fellowship. We each bring different gifts, but we are part of one body of Christ. Take some time to reflect and ask God what role you are to play in this communion.

Today's prayer comes from 'prayer and prayers' a prayer for bravery:

Almighty God, I thank thee for the courage that comes with a great life. Help me to be brave, even if it is only that others may be blest. May I lay a careful foundation and plan to build the best that I can afford. Amen.
