Do you remember the kind of mind you had as a child? Maybe you still have that kind of mind, humerous and free, no restrictions. However, do you recall how much you wanted to listen to your parents and elders as a child? Probably not a whole lot. I know for myself, it could be difficult at times. As children, we try to test our limits, our strengths to the point we may not truly know what is best. You have either witnessed or been the one at the end of being in trouble. However, you learn and grow from the experience. It's very much the same experience in a life of faith, that we are all very much like children.
Today's Gospel states: 'Jesus said to the crowds:
"To what shall I compare the people of this generation?
What are they like?
They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another,
'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance.
We sang a dirge, but you did not weep.'
For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine,
and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.'
The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said,
'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
But wisdom is vindicated by all her children"' (Luke 7:31-35).
Today's Gospel tells us that we are honestly all like children. We may be older, have more responsibility, perhaps even be in loving relationships. However, we are always learning, always seeking wisdom, which makes us God's children. Only God knows what was, what is, and what will be. It's important to remember this fact, considering how prideful and determined we can be. Take some time to ask God to let you be more open to discovering His wisdom, and less determined to seek your own.
Today's prayer comes from 'lords prayer words' a prayer for God's Wisdom:
Father, take me to the place
where I am saved from my pride and arrogance
and Christ's humility is centre stage,
where I'm lifting up clean hands
and a pure heart to You.
Take me to the place
where I'm no longer looking at the mountains I face
but looking down upon them,
where I can see clearly and my decisions are flooded
with Your light, truth and justice.
I bend my knee and receive Your truth
I open my ears to receive Your counsel
I open my heart to receive Your eternal wisdom.
