Have you heard the saying: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"? This phrase is very inspiring and challenging. In today's diverse world it is so easy to give up and move on to something else. Do we ever try our hardest to help ourselves? God is always by our side and guiding us, but if we do not put our foot out the door and get out in the world, how can we ever accomplish anything? God cannot help us if we don't try to help ourselves as well. It is the reason we were given free will, to make the choice to seek life, love and God's hopes for us. Have you been trying to help yourself lately or letting life pass you by?
Today's Gospel states:'And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly' (Matthew 15:21-28).
In today's Gospel, there is a woman who was at first turned away. However, she persisted and hoped that God would heal her daughter. Finally, she shows great faith in not only her persistence, but also through believing that God was helping her. Jesus calls her a woman of great faith. If we persist and try to help ourselves for the better, God will help us, good will come our way. In what ways are you helping yourself today? I know for myself it could be stepping out of security and putting myself out there for more activities I'll enjoy outside of work. Take some time to ask God to aid you in standing up, and taking a step to change your life for the better.
Today's prayer comes from 'aarp' the serenity prayer:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannotchange;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know thedifference.
Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time;
acceptinghardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinfulworld
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will makeall things right
if I surrender to His will;
that I may be reasonablyhappy in this life
and supremely happy. with Him
