Have you ever gone out camping, or even on an evening walk in the woods and all of a sudden, it gets really dark. You can't really see a thing around you and you're scared to move, to trip, to hit something. Then, all of a sudden, someone turn on a bright flashlight and uses it to help you see, to guide the way. What a relieving feeling, that someone is watching out for not only themselves, but using their light to help you as well. One of my favourite quotes fro the Harry Potter books is, "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light". We are each filled with this source of light, of happiness, of life, within us. Wouldn't it be a waste to hide the light? How then are we being disciples of Christ?
Today's Gospel states:'"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. 14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven' (Matthew 5:13-16).
Growing up, did you ever sing the song "This Little Light of Mine"? Everyone knows the next line: "I'm gonna let it shine". When you are given a gift, you don't put it aside and let it rust and rot right? You use it, and show gratitude and joy. God has given us each the gift of light, of life, of love through His son, Jesus. As Jesus took up his cross, he restored each of us to life, so that we might live eternally with God in paradise. This light is knowing and seeking the love Christ gave to us, embracing it and giving it to others, especially those who don't yet know of his love. Each of us are gifted with the Holy Spirit, in different ways, to help bring people to eternal life and love. For me, it's through music and the ability to listen and give advice. What is your light for the world and how are you meant to let it shine?
Today's prayer comes from 'Teach us to pray' a prayer for letting our light shine:
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your light. You are the Light of the World and You give us Your light so that the world can see us as different. Help us Lord to be partakers of Your light and share that light with a lost and dying world. Guide and direct us Holy Spirit to encounters with others where we may allow Your light to shine brightly. There is nothing impossible for You Lord, so may our prayers be great big prayers to a great big God. May we connect with You and Your Power. In Jesus Name. AMEN.
