What is the definition of the word 'omnipotent'? The dictionary states it is"(of a deity) having unlimited power; able to do anything". Religions, specifically Catholicism, use this term often when talking about God. But why do we say this? The main reason is because in Catholicism, we believe that God is existing in the world and out of this world. God knows every moment of time that has been, is now, and ever will be. God is able to see the entire picture, whereas we, being merely humans, can only see the past and the present. As we are created in the image and likeness of God, we have some ability to reason and perceive what could be through using foresight, we do not know everything.
How then can we possibly know if our faith is valid, if we are putting our trust in something worthwhile, something special? It is all a matter of personal and communal faith, and a matter of using foundational proof, but also personal belief and revelation towards building grounds for what we believe. For me personally, studying Catholicism and seeing how it has changed over time, and helped change society for the better, it is possible to see God working. Then there are the personal experiences, through retreats and relationships that make us realize just how impossible it is for us to try and control the world, let alone our own lives. Looking at the way a sun sets, or how beautiful the stars are, it is inevitable how creation is far beyond any human comprehension for how everything was made. But it was made, and by one who knows all time, space and being of our existence. God is therefore omnipotent.
In today's Gospel we read:'"When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. 34Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' 40And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' 41Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?' 45Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' 46And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life"' (Matthew 25:31-46).
Jesus tells us a bit about God in this passage, and how we can even begin to grasp what His plans are for us in this life. We need to realize that God's plan is beyond us and put our hope in believing in this plan. In doing this, we will begin to recognize God's works in our everyday life.
Today's prayer comes from 'belief net', a prayer for believing:
You are Good. And when you made people in your image you said we were, “Very Good.” Lord, I want to have the faith of Jesus Himself. He said that nothing is impossible to those who believe. I want to be in the faith category, seeing opportunities for miracles in every challenge, seeing your great ability superimposed over every hopeless situation. Father, your Word says that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Today I will listen to your Word. I open up my ears and my eyes to your Truth. Thank you for modern technology that allows me to listen to your Word all day long and to immerse myself in faith-filled teaching and preaching. Lead me and guide me as I seek to strengthen my faith to the place where I am unmoved, unimpressed, and underwhelmed by anything and everything but You!
