Listen for God
Everyone has at least one or two dependable people that they can turn to when times are joyful or when things get tough. Do you place your trust in those closest to you? Is it easy for you to take advice or even criticism when it is rightfully given? Part of being human comes the desire to face every situation with strength and pride, and sometimes there is difficulty that comes trusting those closest to us when they try to bring us back on track. When you consider the person of Jesus, many didn't trust him, asking him outright 'why should we trust you?'. They didn't believe him to be the Son of God and so did not trust his words, his teachings. How wrong they were and look at what they missed out on. Jesus tells us that God works in Him, through Him, but that God is also working through each of us, as we follow, accept and evangelize in His name. What a gift. God is not only speaking through you, but those around you, especially when things get challenging. Consider this today: what is God trying to teach you and how is He trying to help you grow through using those around you?
Today's Gospel states: "The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, 'I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of these do you stone me?' The Jews answered him, 'It is not for a good work that we stone you but for blasphemy; because you, being a man, make yourself God.' Jesus answered them, 'Is it not written in your law, `I said, you are gods'? If he called them gods to whom the word of God came (and scripture cannot be broken), do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, `You are blaspheming,' because I said, `I am the Son of God'? If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.' Again they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John at first baptized, and there he remained. And many came to him; and they said, 'John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.' And many believed in him there" (John 10:31-42).
Today's reading talks about how the people try to say that Jesus is being blasphemous for claiming to be God. They don't understand what is or what is to come, that Jesus is one with God and trying to teach them and bring them to know God's love. Through Jesus' act of love on the cross, we too are each called to know God and to give and receive that love from others. God is speaking to us through those around us, even when we don't realize it. What is God trying to tell you today?
Thank you for loving me as you do. Help me to trust in You and those that You may be using to change me and form me into a better person. I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
