Investing Yourself in Faith
How do you spend your time? What do you invest the most of your time in? Do you work long hours, dedicating the time to your job? Is it spent on hobbies that you enjoy, be that video games, binging television shows, exercise, reading? There are many ways that we can use our time. Everything that we invest ourselves in further builds us up to be the people we are. You are how you spend your time. When you consider idols, this cannot only be physical idols that we worship, but those things that we give ourselves to time and time again. Who you consider how you spend the majority of your time and thought, is it spent on doing good, bringing glory to God's name, or do some adjustments need to be made? You are what you eat. What are you eating? What are you ingesting and investing your time in?
Today's reading states: "King Nebuchadnezzar questioned them: 'Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you will not serve my god, or worship the golden statue that I set up? Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe, and all the other musical instruments; otherwise, you shall be instantly cast into the white-hot furnace; and who is the God that can deliver you out of my hands?' Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar, 'There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue which you set up.' Nebuchadnezzar's face became livid with utter rage against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times more than usual and had some of the strongest men in his army bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and cast them into thewhite-hot furnace. King Nebuchadnezzar rose in haste and asked his nobles, 'Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?' 'Assuredly, O king,' they answered. 'But,' he replied, 'I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God.' Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, 'Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel to deliver the servants that trusted in him; they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies rather than serve or worship any god except their own God'" (Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95).
Today's reading talks about 3 servants of God who are tested. They are offered a choice, to worship the false gods, the idols, or to be put into the fire. They do not deny God, and choose Him, choosing the fire over idolatry. God rescues them from the fire, protecting his people. We are often enslaved by idols, our attention captivated by things that do not really matter, spending our time on things that lead us away from growing closer to God, and therefore pull us from God. God calls us to embrace the fullness of life, choosing life, choosing Him. We are called to grow closer to God and seek Him all our days. Do you take the necessary time daily continuously to grow closer with God? What are some things that you spend your time on that may pull you from God?
Today we pray:
Thank you for helping me to know you in this life. Help me to invest my time in the good, bringing me closer to you in every decision I make. I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
