What Can't You Live Without?
If you were stranded on a dessert island, what are three things that you could not live without? It seems like an easy question to grapple with at first, but when you really think about it and consider it more closely, it's a challenging one. It depends on the type of person you are, the things you value most, how sensible you are. There are many things to consider. Would you ask for a particular food and water, or equipment to clean and cook food and water so that there would be enough to last? Would you bring something for leisure, or to keep enriching your knowledge, maybe your Bible? Living in a world where we have so many processions, it can be challenging to pick just a few things to take with us. We live in a world where we have become very attached to what we have, and don't put enough emphasis on who we are as people, our good qualities, our gifts. God challenges us to let go of the desire to hold on to material things' and really be ready to get up and go forward without the baggage. Would you be ready to go onto the island with mere trust in God?
Today's Gospel states:'And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere' (Luke 9:1-6).
Today's reading talks about how we tend to rely too much on our personal belongings to get us through day-to-day. We get too comfortable with staying where we are, with the things that we have. Honestly for myself, I find that to go anywhere I need to be prepared for anything, having at least a big bag of things with me. Imagine that during Jesus' time, he commanded his disciples to get up, go out and leave everything behind, to trust in God to provide everything they would need for their journey. It would have been hard, especially since many of them would have had inheritance from their families to consider, enough to make a life and a family. However, God led them to do great things, ensuring that every need was met, and look at how far they spread the Good News! Take some time today to ask God to help you let go of your need for material possessions and to put your trust in Him to provide.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know that I am loved, that I can put my trust fully in You. Help me to let go of the hold I have on material possessions, and let me trust in You to provide for whatever I may need.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
