What Do You Offer?
Do you ever make offerings for other people? Maybe you offer to pay a dinner bill for friends or family, or offer to give someone a ride home after a long day of work. We do different kinds of offerings, possibly even just offering some of our time to help at the food bank, or assisting in the community play that's happening. Why do we offer of ourselves? It feels good to give, to look beyond just our own interests and show we care in the little ways that we can give. In this way, we represent Christ to the world, through showing what it means to give of ourself through love, even though it may be sacrificial at times. Is there a greater example of what it means to offer yourself to the world than that of Christ on the Cross?
Today's Reading states:'who rules by his might for ever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations -- let not the rebellious exalt themselves. [Selah] Bless our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard, I will offer to thee burnt offerings of fatlings, with the smoke of the sacrifice of rams; I will make an offering of bulls and goats. [Selah] Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for me. But truly God has listened; he has given heed to the voice of my prayer' (Psalms 66:8-9, 16-17, 20).
Today's reading talks about how God listens to our prayers. The prophet singing here states that they will prepare offerings for God, as God has offered everything for us. In their time, an offering would be a sacrifical Lamb or goat in the sacred Temple. For us, giving an offering now can mean different things, depending on your circumstances in life. You can devote time to lead or even attend a Bible study, maybe offer yourself in a ministry at Church, maybe give time to help those in need. It could mean right now putting aside time to pray with your family each night. What do you give as an offering to God? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you offer all that you can to show the world God's love.
Today we pray:
Thank You for showing me what it means to offer Yourself completely for the world, out of love, through Jesus. Help me to offer myself in the way that I can, in order to show Your love and life to the world through me.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
