What is your understanding of having eternal life? Is it like in all of those movies you see, where you live on earth as an immortal. Many think about the Cullens from Twilight, Vampires, being undead. I know I've read my fair share of books that try to touch on this topic in one way or another, none being realistic obviously. However, it's interesting how curious we are and all of the different interpretations we develop looking at what it means to die, what happens after death, and whether we will live on some how in an immortal form. We're not talking about the walking dead, though some do believe in reincarnation, coming back in another earthly form. God invites us into eternal life through Him, through Jesus His Son, that we may seek Him on earth and be reunited with Him after death. Not immortality, but everlasting life in another form, one we cannot hope to really understand until we actually die. Where do you stand then on thoughts of immortality?
Today's Gospel states:'Do not marvel that I said to you, `You must be born anew.' The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit." Nicode'mus said to him, "How can this be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life"'(John 3:7-15).
Today's reading talks about what it means to live an eternal life through God. Those who trust in God, and follow Jesus, being devoted followers and people of love, will be reunited after death. Through Jesus, we see that death is not thr final ending, but the chance for new life in him. In order to strive for this eternal life, we need to be devoted people of faith on earth, doing the best we can to help those in need, to attend mass and the Sacraments, to pray and build relationship with God and be people of love. It's a never ending challenge, but definitely worthwhile in the end. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you to seek eternal life in Him.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know You in my life. Fill me with the desire to continually seek You, and to strive for eternal life in You when my time comes.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
