Be Free to Move

Have you ever spent hours on end, either listening to a teacher lecturing in class, listening to a presentation, even watching what seemed like a never-ending movie? It can be a stress in itself just having to sit there for that long period of time. I know for myself, I always need to be able to move or fidgit with something to keep me occupied, or it becomes very strenuous to pay attention. That feeling when you can finally move again and stretch, digest everything, is the best feeling. You feel free, and really want to run around the block or do something to move. They actually say that moving around while studying for a test is beneficial, getting all of the brain cells moving, but that's besides the point. The feeling of freedom when you can finally move and walk is an important mindset, one that is triggered in our faith as well. Typically when you feel the Holy Spirit moving within you, you want to go out, to spring into action. God calls us to jump up and go out to freely share our faith, to speak, to actively search. When is the last time you were active in your faith?

Today's Gospel states:'Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father." They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. You do what your father did." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God." Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I came not of my own accord, but he sent me' (John 8:31-42).

Today's reading talks about how anyone who commits sin is a slave to sin, but if you put belief in Jesus, you can be free. If we believe, we can be free. This doesn't just mean we're free to go back to old patterns, or even free to live an ordinary, isolated life. We are free to go, to use our experience of faith, the knowledge we have of God's love, and go, to be active and move others in faith. This can be done through attending daily mass, starting a faith club or devotion, helping at a community that needs aid, even just speaking with friends about how faith is moving you. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you stand up and move others actively through faith.

Today we pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being present in my life. Help me to ignite the same spark of faith in those around me that You have brought to me.

I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
