What Does the Future Hold?
Can you tell the future? Probably not, at least, not the real future. I bet at some point in your life you've gone to a fortune teller, or even just played the game where the 'symbol' that is shown on your finger predicts your fortune for that specific event. We played that game a lot as kids on the bus. Either way, none of us are prophets (that we know of), who have been given the gift of prediction and deeper insight into the ways of the world. We know some of these prophets right? From Isaiah to Jonah, to Jesus our Messiah. It's easy to get caught up in trying to understand what the future holds. During Jesus' time, the people hoped for a Messiah, one who would deliver them from their enemies, and be a King for them, as the prophets of old had predicated. What hopes do you try to foretell for your future now? Do you leave it in God's hands or try to be in control?
Today's Gospel states:'After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was at hand. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from." So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, "You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me." So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come' (John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30).
Today's reading talks about how Jesus asks the people if they know him, and where he comes from. They know him, yet they don't know what the future days will hold. Jesus tries to drill it into them that He is the way, if they follow His teachings and make a change, they are following God's will for their lives. They would then have a better idea as to what their future would hold: being reunited with God for eternity in thw afterlife, as well as the life they are living now. What are some ways that you try to predict your future and maintain control? Only God knows it all, it's time to trust in Him. Take some time to pray and ask God to help take control of your future.
Today we pray:
Thank You for being the light in my life, the hope for each and every day. Help me to loosen my grip on ideas I have for my future and learn to trust You completely.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
