What is Fair?
What is the meaning of the word fair? Some would say equality, justice, to get and receive what one deserves, or what someone thinks they deserve. Determining fairness is always a challenge, based on who is talking. For many, they consider their life situation to not be fair, based on certain circumstances that come to pass, and how hard they work to live a good life. What we forget to think about though is that we have life. We are loved so much that we are given the chance to live and embrace this life God gives us. Gos has given us the chance to live because He loves us so much. When we think about fairness, there is nothing we could do to ever repay that love. Instead of trying to consider what is fair, we should be open to whatever comes our way, and face it with joy, as we have no idea how long we have to be people who love and are loved.
Today's Gospel states:'Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back"' (Luke 6:36-38).
Today's reading talks about what is right and fair, going back to the big idea that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. We get what we give. If we love, then we will be loved in turn. How often does the thought "how is that fair" Cross your mind? Maybe it's time to change this thought to one of joy, one that gives everything to God. Next time you catch yourself wondering about fairness, ask yourself if it was fair for an innocent man to bear the nails and take up the Cross, for our sins. Take some time to pray and ask God to help you face every situation with joy and gratitude, even the ones that challenge our idea of what's fair.
Today we pray:
Thank You for giving the most generous gift of Your Son, so that I might have life. Help me to move past the idea of fairness and get in the mindset of facing every day with joy.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
