See the Signs
What signs do you see in your daily life? There are stop signs, telling us to stop, look, and proceed with caution. There are those that guide us to our destination. Maybe you're looking desperately for a Tim Hortons to get your morning coffee fix, and you finally see the sign that brings you joy. We use signs in our daily lives to point us on the right path, to ensure we're getting where we need to go. When it comes to faith, we look for similar signs, asking God to guide us, to show Himself, to somehow tell us if we're doing His will. We ask for signs. However, God works in mysterious ways, and very rarely is there an obvious sign given, like a stop sign, something we're used to. God speaks to us through Scripture, through divine interpretation, through our Church leaders, through prayer, and through those around us. Though it's not a clear sign, visible that we are going in the right direction, sometimes it's even more direct, like a rejection so to keep searching for the right career, or hearing the homily you needed at that very moment. How has God been showing you the signs?
Today's Gospel states:'The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, to test him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation." And he left them, and getting into the boat again he departed to the other side' (Mark 8:11-13).
Today's reading talks about how the people would asks for signs from God, in order to determine His will, that He is with them. Jesus tells them that they must be patient, and look beyond the signs that are obvious. Maybe we're just too caught up in the business of life to see the signs right in front of us. I know for myself, it's not always easy to take something fromthe homily at mass. I figured it may help if I do something to ensure I'm attentively listening, so from now on, I'm bringing in a mass journal, to pray before mass that God would speak to me and make me attentive, and to write down one thing that spoke to me in the mass. Are you attentively looking for the signs God is putting before you? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you actively seek His will, and be paying attention to what's right in front of you.
Today we pray:
Thank You for working within my life. Help me in making the necessary changes so that I can always be attentive to the signs You put before me.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
