Some Battles are a Loss
Do you ever have difficulty trying to get others to listen to you? Sometimes you say something repeatedly, and they don't even flinch in acknowledgment. Maybe you ask repeatedly if they'll help you with a chore, and then after the third time, you give up and set to the task yourself, defeated. It's hard to go on smiling when you feel like nobody is hearing you, truly taking the time to listen and respect your input. As frustrating as this can be, we keep trying, keep pushing, and doing our best to be heard. In Jesus' time, it would've been an even greater challenge. Think about it, people had been set in their ways for decades, with certain laws and traditions that even past prophets had approved. Then Jesus tell them God has another plan, a better way. Many wouldn't listen, despite his earnest teachings. However, he continued doing God's will and would preach his message for those who were listening. Look at our world today because of his efforts, his sacrifice and love. Never give up trying to be heard!
Today's Gospel states:'And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them." So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them' (Mark 6:7-13).
Today's reading talks about how the disciples are to go out and take nothing with them, and to preach to those who would listen. If people wouldn't listen, then they would try again, and then move on. It's important that we try to be people who deliver God's message, in every word we say, the actions we make, the people we are. If someone won't give you the chance, maybe try again later with another tactic, even just through being a friend who listens inturn. Take some time to pray and ask God to help make you a disciple who speaks His word.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know and hear Your word, Your will in my life. Give me the courage and wisdom to speak to others about Your word in my life.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
