Do the Maximum
Do you do the bare minimum you need to in a day? There's a set goal, a list of things you need to accomplish, but do you get that list done and call it a day, or go beyond what's expected of you, and plan a family night, make a nice meal for your spouse? It's important for us to go above and beyond, because that's who we are from baptism, set on fire by the Holy Spirit to go, to act, to keep trying no matter what barriers we face. If we do the bare minimum, we are leading down the path of slothfulness, not quite laziness, but having the ability to do more if we really put in the effort. You know that when we put in the effort, it will pay off in the end, and we will seek the rewards of our hard work. So many of us put in the work in our jobs, in our schooling, with our families, but do we put the effort into our faith lives, and building relationship with God?
Today's Gospel states:'"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'? Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty"' (Luke 17:7-10).
Today's Gospel talks about how we need to not just do what is asked of us, but to go above and beyond. For myself, I've always been one to go above and beyond in assignments, part-time jobs, cleaning around the house, anything that takes work. I know that if I put in little effort, then I'm not rising to my full potential, not doing my best. God calls us to be worthy servants, not just doing what is expected of us, in terms of scripture, following the rules, but taking a step further. We need to help others to do their best, and find the path God is calling them towards. Are you doing the bare minimum in your faith life? Take some time to ask God to help you rise above expectations and be a worthy servant.
Today we pray:
Thank You for calling me into Your house, Your community of believers. Help me to not just do the bare minimum when it comes to living a good faith life, but to rise above, and help others find You in the process.
I pray this in Your most holy name, Amen.
