How Do You Show You Care?
Do you take the necessary time to check in with those you care for? It's one thing to care, and another to actively show your love and support through actions. We are a communion of people. God made us people for a reason, to love, depend on and support one another. For me, this means constantly staying in touch with close family and friends, while also having genuinely caring conversations with the stranger at the cashier line. What are you doing to show you care?
Today's Gospel states:'Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day." Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him' (Luke 13:10-17).
Today's reading talks about how Jesus helps the woman on the Sabbath. He wasn't disregarding the importance of the Sabbath. Quite the opposite, he was honoring God through helping a woman who needed it most. How often do we forget to check in with family, to make calls to show we care, to stop and listen when a passing friend looks like they're having a rough time? God calls us to be in union and communion with everyone. Take some time to reflect and ask God to help you be a caring individual towards all people.
Today we pray:
Thank You for making me a part of this communion of people. Help me to focus less on myself and try to reach out to those who need me today. Let me be a disciple who shows what it means to love.
I pray this in Your most holy name, Amen.
