God Sets Me Free
What is the feeling of freedom? Is it escaping to a good book? For me, there's no greater feeling of freedom than being out for a morning run seeing the stars, and then watching as the sun rises for a new day. For many, this place you feel freedom is very similar or equal to what you call your 'happy place'. As good as this feeling of freedom is, it's only good if you can find God in it, God as the spark. God gives us Jesus, the greatest act of love in life, to set us free from the weight of our sins, to bring us freedom, life and the grace of finding redemption. Think about how you feel after receiving the Eucharist at Communion. Do you feel the Holy Spirit working within you, that feeling of peace and need to act upon the freedom of grace that God gives you?
Today's Reading states: 'For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Now I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is bound to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is of any avail, but faith working through love' (Galatians 5:1-6).
Today's reading talks about how Christ sets us free from slavery. We are set free from the burden of our sins and given the chance to change in our lives, to seek forgiveness, to be the disciples that God is calling us to be. Each of us have had times where we have strayed from our faith, from attending mass, falling into sin and occupying ourselves with temptations instead. It's not a good feeling. Some of these things, such as drinking, partying, drugs may be fun for a time, but they'll never fill the gap where God is in our hearts. They'll never bring the same free feeling to act in love, to make a difference, to impact others with God at your centre. Take some time to ask God to help set you free.
Today we pray:
Thank You for giving me the chance to change, calling me back from every action I take towards sin. Thank you for giving Your Son, to set me free from my sins, to give me the opportunity to seek You. Help me to use this gift of freedom to make You my centre and to guide my life by grace.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
