Pray the Lord's Prayer

How do you pray? I find that if I pray spontaneously in my mind, it's very easy to get off topic and lose focus of the moment. Some people feel the same way about doing traditional prayers, as if they don't mean as much because we're reciting them by memory, but not considering the words being spoken. There's a reason that they say singing a prayer is like praying twice. You try your hardest to make the music sound right, focusing on every word and phrase. You're also praying aloud in the case of music. I find it's very easy to say a prayer quietly, but more difficult aloud. Jesus gives us the words to pray, all we need to do is actually act upon praying, and mean each and every word we say. Are there areas where you can work on your prayer life?

Today's Gospel states: 'He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation"' (Luke 11:1-4).

Today we hear the introduction of the Lord's Prayer by Jesus to his disciples. In saying the Our Father, we remember God's love, the good that He has given to us. We ask for help from temptation and restate our beliefs from baptism. Prayer is meant to bring us closer in relationship with God. Think about your earthly friendships. If you were to speak to your friends but not really show interest in their opinions, their feelings, it's only a one-sided relationship. The same is true with our relationship with God. Prayer is meant to bring us closer, really trying to give of ourselves, and listen in turn. Whether it's through the Rosary, personal prayer, or even group prayer, we need to give our best effort. Ask God to help you make the most of your relationship, starting with your prayer life.

   Today we pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving Your one and only Son for us, for teaching us to be in relationship with You. Help me to take time to pray each and every day, and let me step out of my comfort zone, making the most of my prayer life.

I pray this in Your most holy name, Amen.
