Do Your Best
Do you try your best to be the best? It's important for each of us to get the most out of our lives, and to continually better ourselves and make improvements. It's important to be humble, to make mistakes and grow from them, so to help other people to do the same. However, so often we push ourselves towards achieving impossible standards, goals that really don't mean a whole lot in this life. Think about it, how hard did you work to be the top student, not spending any time at parties or building relationships because that took your entire focus. Perhaps it's been time spent towards getting that promotion, where you could have been with your family. These things are great goals, but need to be in moderation, with faith and family being the primary focus, at the top of the list. Our first command is to love, and to share that love. What goals are getting in the way of this? Is it time to strive to be the best parents, sibling, spouse instead?
Today's Gospel states: 'And an argument arose among them abest. which of them was the greatest. But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side, and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great." John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us." But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you"' (Luke 9:46-50).
Today's reading talks about how each of the disciples wants to be seen as the best. Jesus doesn't choose one of them, but advises them to think harder. He tells them that the one who receives the child, takes in the needy, shows love, is great. Not the best, but good in every sense of the meaning. He is good, because he helps others to learn to love, making love the centre and priority. Take some time to ask God to help you prioritize your life, and seek love as your greatest goal.
Today we pray:
Thank you for helping me to be where I am right now. Let me do my best in every challenge I face. Help me to make receiving and sharing Your love the most important goal in my daily life.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
