Be a Selfless Disciple

Do you give your time and energy in order to help other people? So often, we do good deeds, good actions because we hope to get something in return, even if it's simply just thanks for the actions. When you think about giving as an act of love, a gift that is given with no desire for compensation, we reflect Christ on the cross, God giving of His Son so that we can live. God has given us life, a selfless act of love which we can never repay, and couldn't even imagine how repayment would be possible. If God loves us to this extent, is it not possible to reflect this love through giving of ourselves to others without seeking reward?

Today's Gospel states: 'And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels' (Luke 9:23-26).

Today's reading talks about how in order to be a true disciple, we need to lay down our lives to God, and give everything. Being human, it can be difficult to be selfless. I know for myself, I love having time to myself to be athletic at the gym, to play some music on my guitar. Giving of all of our time, and efforts can be challenging, but it's an important step towards disciple ship. Maybe that alone time can be used to benefit a friend in need, or maybe you invite them along to join you. Maybe the music sessions can be worship that you film and share with the neighbour who needs to hear it. Take some time to ask God to help you lay down your life and be selfless.

Today we pray:

Heavenly Father,

Help me to be selfless in every action I take. In every move I make, let me reflect Your love to the world. Help me to be like Christ, and bare my cross each day as Your disciple.

I ask this in Your most holy name, Amen.
