Help Me to Find the Silence

Today we look a little closer at the person of Mary, our mother in faith. I think that if everyone had the attitude and mindset of Mary, the world would be a more communal, and peaceful place. Think about it, a woman who is a mere teenager, barely at the age for marriage (which was young during this time), gives herself full heartedly over to God's will and bares a Son. She doesn't question the angel who comes before her, but surrenders completely to the will God has for her life. Is there something in your life that you're struggling to come to terms with? Maybe you have a career path to decide, and you're tied in two directions. The only way to know how to go forward is to trust God, take a step back and take time for silence in order to hear God's voice in your mind and heart. When is the last time you sat in a peaceful silence, and gave the time to God? You can't hope to hear if you're always surrounded with noise and chaos right?

Today's Psalm states: 'And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever"' (Luke 1:46-55).

Today's reading talks about Mary's reaction to God, rejoicing in the Lord, a God who helps the people and leads them into triumph. God can only help us to triumph, to be successful (in every meaning of the word), if we fully rely on His help and direction in our lives. What are some ways that you can be more like Mary? It may be time to let some things go in your life, in order to give time for God to come in, such as taking time for adoration, trying to go to daily mass, even turning off the radio on the morning drive so to have time for prayer. Take some time to ask God to help you surrender fully to His will for your life.

Today we pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving me people to look up to, that guide me in what it means to be your faithful and willing disciple, such as Mary our Mother in faith. Help me to be more like Mary, and surrender to Your will. Help me to find time for silence in order to seek Your grace and listen for Your guidance.

I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
