Offer Each Morning
What's the first thing you do when you get up in the morning? Do you stretch, maybe go for a run? Maybe you look at the clock and roll back over, taking another half an hour to rest? You'd think, being people of faith, that the first thing we'd do is pray, thanking God for the new day and another chance to live, embracing the day with a fresh start. I know for myself, it takes a really long time to mentally wake up, and so I pray as I get up, put on my shoes and head out for a run. God gives us life, the least we could do is give thanks for this opportunity. What are your strategies for prayer in the morning?
Today's Psalm states:'Give ear to my words, O LORD; give heed to my groaning. Hearken to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to thee do I pray. O LORD, in the morning thou dost hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for thee, and watch. For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee. The boastful may not stand before thy eyes; thou hatest all evildoers. Thou destroyest those who speak lies; the LORD abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men' (Psalms 5:2-3, 4-7).
Today's Psalm talks about how in the morning we listen for God's voice and direction, offering as tribute and sacrifice the day ahead, the trials we know are coming. In Jesus' time, the people would wake up each morning to offer animal sacrifices to God, as a start to the day. This would take quite a bit of time, and yet today we find it hard to even offer a short prayer upon waking. Especially in the busiest times, we need to take that time and remember to be thankful for faith and for the blessings God has given to us. Take some time to pray each morning and give the day to God, starting off on the right note.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer offering your heart to God each morning:
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparationfor my sins, for the intentions of all our associates, and in particular for the intentions of our Holy Father for this month. Amen.
