Go and Preach the Gospel!
What does it mean to preach? During the time of Joseph, it was more the father of the household would share wisdom around a fire, guiding his children. As we move towards Jesus' time, it's either the Pharisees preaching the law, Sadducees giving guidance and speaking God's Word in Scripture, or those who stand apart and preach like Jesus, usually categorized with the Zealots. In our modern world, preaching can be anything from a priest giving a homily at mass, to a band leading worship for a crowd, to an individual person giving blog testimonies for a random audience. Jesus preached to the sick, the sinners, the poor, trying to help those who needed it most learn of the Good News of God's Kingdom. How do you preach?
Today's Gospel states:'And preach as you go, saying, `The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying, give without pay. Take no gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it, and stay with him until you depart. As you enter the house, salute it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you' (Matthew 10:7-13).
In today's Gospel we hear about the significance of preaching the Good News. We are told to go out, just as ourselves without gold, silver, without taking anything with us but our faith and trust that God will guide us. That can be challenging, considering in the modern world we rely so much on things, technology, carrying a suitcase with us wherever we go. However, the people way back when would have their firm belief, and the clothes on their backs, trusting God would give them strength, and provide. Are you ready to face the challenge of discipleship? Take some time to ask God to help you be prepared to face the call of evangelization and to have faith.
Today's prayer comes from 'CCO' a prayer for Apostolic Evangelization:
Lord, when you called Abraham, he responded, “Ready” When you called Isaiah, he answered, “Here I am Lord.” When the angel Gabriel called out to Mary, she responded, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” Lord, I hear you calling my name. I hear you entrusting me with the task of building your kingdom. Like those holy men and women who have gone before me, I give you my ‘yes’! I will go anywhere you want me to go. I will do anything you want me to do. I will say anything you want me to say. Holy Spirit I welcome you and ask you to guide me. Form in me an apostle’s heart filled with love for Christ and zeal for souls. I will commit myself with courage and generosity to the New Evangelization. I will build brick-by-brick, the city of God inside the city of man. Amen
