What are the things that make you anxious in life? Bills to pay, a new job, certain colleagues, time itself? When your'e a soon to be bride, there can be many worries about the plans ahead. Will everyone enjoy the day? Will the dresses look perfect? Will the weather be nice for photos? Will the evening go as scheduled? There are many things about a wedding day that make the nerves spike, causing a slightly anxious and jittery bride, along with everyone helping with the preparations. However, once the day comes to pass, everything goes perfectly and you wonder what all of the nerves were for, as it flies by fast (so I've been told). In the same way, we are all brought into the wedding of faith, where Christ is the groom and we as a Church are the bride. Christ becomes the knowing side of the scenario, while we are brought in to a new union, an unknowing yet exciting relationship through faith. Do you let the worries be a burden?
Today's Gospel states:'And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat, nor about your body, what you shall put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well' (Luke 12:22-31).
In today's Gospel, we hear about how we needn't be nervous about anything, nothing of the earth. Life is more than about food, clothing, and worries of the world. God brings us into a unique and loving relationship, replicating that of a bride and groom, yet much stronger. We need not worry about things in life, as God is always helping us along the way. Does your relationship with God help you move past times of anxiety and worry? Take some time to ask God to help guide you to a place of trust and calming grace.
Today's prayer comes from 'believe' a prayer against worry:
Dear Father, I admit that I often forget that you are with me. I often forget what you’re like. Would you please forgive me for that? I need to get to know you better. I need to get to know your Word and your promises better. Help me to put you first in every area of my life. Help me to live one day at a time. Help me to not worry about tomorrow but instead focus on what you’re doing in my life right now. I want to trust in your promise to take care of every one of my needs — financial, relational, physical, social, spiritual, and emotional. Help me to trust you more and worry less. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
