Love like God
What does it mean to love, to feel loved, to express love? Think about all of those songs on the radio. There's songs of devotion between two people, songs of desire, songs about break ups and longing. The greatest love, even greater than we could ever hope to feel or express on earth is the love God has for us. The greatest expression of love is through sacrifice, giving of one's self for another. Think about a mother and her child. She works to provide, while giving of her time and dedicating her attention to their child's desires and dreams. She could spend all of her spare time engaging in her own personal hobbies, yet she gives it all for her children. That's sacrificial love. God gives us everything, time, support, hope, redemption, and even Jesus, His Son on the cross, so that we have the chance to live and be free, to seek Him.
Today's Gospel states:'"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. This I command you, to love one another'(John 15:12-17).
Today's Gospel talks about how God wants us first and foremost to love. We didn't choose God, God chose us.. God created us in His image and likeness to love. As God gives us love through Jesus, His Son, we too need to show sacrificial love. If we don't show love in our actions, how can we expect those around us to show this courtesy. Yet God does it, whether we're fearful or hopeful. Take some time to ask God to help you to love.
Today's prayer comes from 'prayerscapes' a prayer for being wrapped in love:
Father, Wrap me in love Snuggle up tight, warm with forgiveness, Safe in your light. Wrap me and hold me, Safe in your arms, melt my resentment, Protect me from harm. Wrap me completely, And under your wing, come and transform me, Touch me to sing. Wrap me and whisper, Of unending love, paint me a picture Of heaven above. Wrap me with pure truth, Where I hear no lies, bathed in sweet promise, Breathe faith alive. Wrap up my hardness, The hurt and the pain, till I become Soft in your presence again. Wrap all the pieces Each fragment of me, gathered and treasured, Mend me with peace. Wrap me with love, So that I may give love And find love, and freedom again. Amen.
