What is on your bucket list? So many people have lifelong goals, things they wish to achieve by the end of their life, by a certain age, or maybe a list of things to do at some point, the bucket list. I know for myself, there are many things on this list, getting married (coming up soon!), getting a teaching position, having children, travelling around Europe. There are many things we wish to accomplish in life, but do they become the ultimate goal, that one thing that we will feel fulfilled once we make it? The ultimate gaol can’t be found on earth, as we only get a mere glimpse of it. All these things we plan to achieve may help us become better people, more giving and loving. However, the ultimate goal needs to be seeking God’s will, being rooted in faith in everything we do. What are your goals?
Today's Gospel states:'Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me; and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:35-40).
In today’s Gospel, we hear about how Jesus brings fulfillment. In him, we will no longer hunger or thirst. Through him, we find eternal life. God gives us His Son, as a gift of love, to redeem us and give us the chance to change, to seek Him continually. Without God at the centre of your life, there’s no love, no purpose at the end. God makes everything clear, becomes the root in our life, and helps us to love and be loved in everything we do. God puts all of those things on the bucket list into perspective. Do you seek God’s love as a lifelong goal? Take some time to pray and ask God to help you set good, fulfilling goals in your life.
Today’s prayer comes from ‘belief net’ a prayer for good goal setting:
I admit I haven’t navigated a right way to live in this world with Heaven’s values as my top-tier priority. Forgive me, Lord. Please grant me the ability to seek you first, knowing that all my other priorities will line up perfectly behind that One. Teach me today to make love my highest goal – loving you, loving and forgiving others, and loving and forgiving myself.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
