Discern Your Path
What charge does God give us as disciples? One of my favourite songs "You know better than I", fits our given mission perfectly. We think we're given a certain task, that we're meant to be great, wealthy, and maybe that is so. However, so much of the time, God has something completely different planned for us, more than we could comprehend, and so He gives us pieces at a time, leading up to our discerned lifestyle. The main purpose of our lives is to love, to seek God's love and give it to others in turn. We're so small, and minor in the lifespan of the world, throughout all time, yet God has a special task for each of us, leaving prints on the world through us.
Today's Gospel states:'And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them." So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them'(Mark 6:7-13).
In today's Gospel, we hear how he calls 12 people, 12 disciples to follow him and take charge. The mission was to go out and share God's love, to bring to others the same love that Jesus gave on the cross, sacrificial. Maybe this means in our lives, the plan isn't a big and wealthy job, but to stay home so to care for your family. Maybe it's to be a servant through missionary work. Whatever your call may be, God is guiding you. In order to hear this call, it's important to remember to pray for discernment, to hear God's call, and to face every situation with love. Take some time to ask God to help you discern the call for your life, and to go into every situation with His love.
Today's prayer comes from 'knowing Jesus' a prayer for discernment and Godly counsel:
Loving Lord I ask that You would give me a wise and understanding heart –a heart that readily discerns Your will so that I make the best choices for my life and am enabled to give the best help to those in need. Give me an obedient heart - a heart that is ready and willing to say Thy will be done and not to insist that my will is best. Lord I know that the heart is deceptive and I pray that I will be kept from wrongly discerning Your truth because of my pride or foolishness – keep me low at the cross I pray. Keep me I pray from ungodly council for I know how destructive the loose words of a false witness can be and keep me from a presumptuous attitude that is so destructive to the soul. Open my heart I pray to listen to Your still small voice and give me discernment to know when to speak and what to remain silent – direct and govern my steps I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, AMEN
