What's My Mission?

What is your mission in life? Being people of the world, we may never know in this life. It takes a lifetime to discern, and to see the unique plan God has in store for us. Cardinal Newman writes: "God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work.I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.” God has created each of us as a special link in the chain, through whatever form of discipleship or vocation, we are meant to serve Him.

Today's Gospel states:'Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed; also from Judea and Jerusalem and Idume'a and from beyond the Jordan and from about Tyre and Sidon a great multitude, hearing all that he did, came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they should crush him; for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. And whenever the unclean spirits beheld him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God." And he strictly ordered them not to make him known'(Mark 3:7-12).

Today's Gospel talks about the many people who came to see Jesus. Everyone sought healing, and just to be in his presence. Even those who did not know God came because they saw the great person Jesus was, the light he was bringing. As we see from Cardinal Newman, every one of us has a mission, a call to seek God, to bring about His goodness to the world. We may not know what the future holds, but God has a plan, and we need to learn to trust. In everything, God knows us, and is with us. Take some time to ask God to help you to be open-hearted and trusting in His call for your life.

Today's prayer comes from 'Catholicity' a prayer for the mission of my life:

God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Still, He knows what He is about. Amen.
