Share the Peace
Do we offer peace to the people around us? Think bout during the mass, that one moment when the priest offers peace to everyone, and in turn we respond "and with your spirit", giving peace in turn. What happens next? We exchange peace to those around us, even the people we don't really know. Have you ever sat in a new Church and exchanged peace with people you've never met before? There's a sense of grace just from that exchange, to know that the full body of Christ is opening and loving, smiling and encouraging one another. Do we offer this same peace to those outside of our Church?
Today's Psalm states:'Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints, to those who turn to him in their hearts. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. Yea, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him, and make his footsteps a way'(Psalms 85:9-14).
In today's Psalm we hear how God speaks peace to all people, from the saint to those who turn away their hearts. Glory dwells within creation, as God dwells within creation. Just as each of us are created in His very image and likeness, so too we are each filled with hope and His Spirit. We are all God's people, even those who turn away, so is it not right that we offer peace to everyone? It can be challenging if it's for someone we don't know, or perhaps that one really irritating co-worker. However, just as God gives us peace and grace and hope of redemption, we too need to give peace and hope to the world. Take some time in prayer and ask God to help you give His peace to others.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer for world peace:
Lord, we pray for the power to be gentle; the strength to be forgiving; the patience to be understanding; and the endurance to accept the consequences of holding to what we believe to be right. May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil and the power of love to overcome hatred. We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe in a world emancipated from violence, a new world where fear shall no longer lead men to commit injustice, nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others. Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy to the task of making peace, praying always for the inspiration and the power to fulfill the destiny for which we and all men were created. Amen.
