Sunday, Day of Rest
What should be done on the Sabbath day? For most people, this is generally on Sunday for most religious beliefs, and Saturday for most Jewish communities. What we read in Genesis, the Creation story, is that god created the entire world in 6 days, and on the 7th, He rested. It was a day of peace. Now we fast forward to the present day. Sunday is rarely seen as a day of rest, people still work, do studies, go travelling. It is another day of the week. I know for myself, Saturday evening is when I attend mass, so it gives the entire day Sunday to do other things. Did they perhaps have the right idea, that we give the day to God, to be happy and be with family? Our modern world has become so crazy and constant that we don't have time to slow down.
Today's Gospel states:'One sabbath when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath, or not?" But they were silent. Then he took him and healed him, and let him go. And he said to them, "Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a sabbath day?" And they could not reply to this'(Luke 14:1-6).
In today's Gospel we hear Jesus attesting the Pharisees' demands to do nothing on the Sabbath, no healing, for it is not lawful. They tell him he should not heal, because they believe it goes against God. To heal and help a person is in God's very nature, He wants us to succeed, to seek Him. Jesus is a very example of God's love for the world. So Sunday should then be a day dedicated to God, but to good works done to bring about God's love in the world. This includes mass, family time, rest, things that bring you joy. When was the last time you gave a day to God? Take some time to reflect and ask God to help you give everything to Him.
Today's prayer comes from 'belief net' a morning prayer offering your day to God:
Dear Lord, You have brought me to the beginning of a new day. As the world is renewed fresh and clean, so I ask You to renew my heart with Your strength and purpose. Forgive me the errors of yesterday and bless me to walk closer in Your way today. This is the day I begin my life anew; shine through me so that every person I meet may feel Your presence in me. Take my hand, precious Lord for I cannot make it by myself. Amen.
