Becoming a Saint
We all know what happens on halloween right? It's known as 'all hallows eve' or the devil's night. However, what follows it? All Saints day, the day we acknowledge and appreciate the Saints who have been lights in our faith, who sit beside Christ waiting for us in heaven. Did you know that many of the martyrs are saints? They literally gave their lives for their faith, standing up for the faith they believe in and lived their lives by. Many believed that the martyrs had special power, above the religious leaders (even the bishops) to intercede in prayer, that they would be able to help us in all that we need. Are we taking steps like the Martyrs to become leaders in faith?
Today's First reading states:"Then I saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads." And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel, After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb"(Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14).
In today's reading we hear how with God, there are the angels, and the Saints, gathered with Christ and waiting for us as we go along our journey of faith. What things do we do to help us along our journey to becoming saints? Each of us are called to be like Saints, to lead good lives of love, and to be disciples that bring others to faith. Take some time to ask God to help you be Saint-like and to work each day at being a disciple of Christ.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer to overcome evil and become a saint:
Dear Jesus, in the Sacrament of the Altar, be forever thanked and praised. Love, worthy of all celestial and terrestrial love! Who, out of infinite love for me, ungrateful sinner, didst assume our human nature, didst shed Thy most Precious Blood in the cruel scourging, and didst expire on a shameful Cross for our eternal welfare! Now illumined with lively faith, with the outpouring of my whole soul and the fervor of my heart, I humbly beseech Thee, through the infinite merits of Thy painful sufferings, give me strength and courage to destroy every evil passion which sways my heart, to bless Thee by the exact fulfillment of my duties, supremely to hate all sin, and thus to become a Saint. Amen.
