One Body, Mind, Spirit

As people of faith, we believe that the body and soul are both important in our spiritual journey for seeking God's Kingdom. The Gnostics believe that the body doesn't matter, that it is merely the soul being infused into it, during our life on earth, and that our main goal is to better our spiritual selves. It is interesting to think about, however, as Catholics, we believe everything matters. You were given a mind, a heart, a body for a reason. You were made in the image and likeness of God, and that means something. Jesus came to the world in human form to save the world, to be present with us, representing the way, the truth and the life. He was both human and divine, together, showing us that we too matter as a person in God's eyes.

Today's First Reading states:'For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I of myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin' (Romans 7:18-25).

Today's reading talks about how it is difficult to control the body, for the mind acts on it's own and commands the body. We don't always understand why we do what we do, we make mistakes, we are imperfect. Only God is perfect, but He loves us so much that he sent Jesus to be our saviour, to show us how we can seek the goodness of God's plan for our lives. Take some time to ask God to help you act in mind, body and soul as one person who lives to proclaim the Good News and be a person of love and light.

Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer for peace of mind and spirit:

FORTIFY me with the grace of Your Holy Spiritand give Your peace to my soul that I may be free from all needless anxiety, solicitude and worry. Help me to desire always that which is pleasing and acceptable to You so that Your will may be my will. Amen.
