Do you take time to live your life, or get so caught up in the busy busy rush of it all that you don't feel like you're truly 'living'? You move from one thing to the next to keep yourself busy, but find yourself looking at the clock, yearning for time to pass faster. I find being at work for eight hours can go by incredibly slow, and you move so fast, hoping it'll pass faster, not really taking the time to do what you can to enjoy the day. When it comes to our time with God, do we rush it, putting in time just to say we did, or really focus and think when praying? Are we present in the moment or too caught up in the future and the past?
Today's Gospel states:'Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her"'(Luke 10:38-42).
In today's Gospel, we read that Martha brings Jesus into her house, but is more focussed on the serving and making him comfortable than actually listening. Mary on the other hand, is seated, listening to Jesus' words and holds on to everything he says. So much of the time we are people like Martha, more focussed on being prepared for the life God has given us, and not actually living it and having the actual experience of life. In order to find God's grace in our hearts, we need to have time for peace, to sit still, and to listen. Take some time to ask God to help you be still, to open your heart and mind to living.
Today's prayer comes from 'Christian TT' a prayer to be still:
Yahweh, You are so Holy, You are High and lifted up and worthy to be praised. Father, there are days when the darkness overpowers the light and the storm rages out of control as the rains pour down. I am weak, I am tired, I am weary, I am burdened. Oh merciful Father, give me strength to go on.
Give me patience to be still and remember that You are God.
I don’t see a way out of this. But, I put all my faith and trust in You that a path will open up. New opportunities and new relationships will grace my life. Give me patience to be still and remember that You are God. Through You and Your love, everything that happens to me will make me stronger.
Renew my hope, Oh Lord, give me peace within my soul, knowing that You are in charge. I wait patiently for You, Oh Loving Father, for the abundant showers of blessings that are on their way. I will sing praises unto Your glorious name, as I am graced with love and mercy and I will be eternally grateful. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen!
