The Teacher, the Student
Are you prepared to live a life of faith? Everything we do takes time and practice, in order to better ourselves. A life of faith takes the same, if not more, amount of effort to be a devoted disciple. Think of a student preparing for a big test. They need to focus, to listen to their teacher, to interpret, and to apply what they know. In the same way, we have teachers, prophets of the past, our priests, faith leaders. From there, we live our faith lives and learn how to be disciples, how to pray and how to be a part of the communion of the Church.
Today's Gospel states: 'After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace be to this house!' And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; heal the sick in it and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you; nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that town' (Luke 10:1-12).
In today's Gospel, we learn what it means to be disciples. We must go out, just as we are bringing no belongings with us. We must try to bring people in who want to seek God, and especially those who try to turn away. We are always students who make mistakes and learn something new about God every day, and then become teachers of experience and bring others into lives of faith. Take some time to reflect on what you can do to dive deeper into your faith and become a more devoted disciple.
Today's prayer comes from 'Holy Discipleship Parish' a prayer for discipleship:
Good and Gracious God, Your Son, Jesus Christ, invites all people to follow him and become his disciples.
Touch our hearts, enlighten our minds, and stir our spirit.
Help us daily to take up our cross and follow him; by living his Word and proclaiming his Good News to those around us.
May our faith in you increase, may our hunger for the Gospel intensify, and may our parish be strengthened as we learn to love one another as he has loved us.
For this we pray, Amen.
