What Makes a Leader?
Have you ever been in charge of something? Maybe you were to set up a bake-sale, or helped run a youth retreat. I recently have had the experience in helping form and organize the CCSA Central Conference for this fall. It feels good to be able to be a leader, to be challenged, but also to have your work and hard efforts pay off in the end. If ever you are in doubt about what role you could play as a leader, just think of Jesus as he took up his cross. He suffered, was in pain, and died, all for the sake of this sinful world. He shows us what a true leader should be, how they should bring others into love and kindness, to give hope.
Today's Gospel states: 'And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere' (Luke 9:1-6).
In today's Gospel, we learn how the disciples go out together, in Jesus' name, taking nothing with them but God's strength. They preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus to everyone, even those who chose not to listen, leading everyone who will listen towards Christ. They become pillars of faith for us, examples of who we should be, representing Christ in everything they do. How can you be a leader in your life? Can you help lead others to faith? Take some time to reflect on areas you tend to back down, where you can be strong and bear the cross, like Christ.
Today's prayer comes from 'a spiritual journey of healing' a prayer to be a good leader:
Dear God, I think of the ways that I am a leader in my life.
I am willing to be a good leader.
Please feed me God on your wisdom and your understanding, for my good and the good of all I serve.
Let me recognise and take the authority that is mine to take.
I am willing to be blessed by you and be a blessing to others.
Thank you God for guiding me every step of the way.
