You Got a Friend in Jesus
What kind of friends do you hang around with? They could be work acquaintances, perhaps college friends. People that you trust and have similar interests with. Who we are is shown in what we do and who we spend our time with, so if we are to be people of faith, then what kind of people should we be influenced by and spend hours on end talking to? If Jesus is to be the one we look to at every moment, the one we can talk to and ask for help, he should be our best friend then correct? We should be able to spend all of our time being influenced by the things he teaches us and rely on him for help. Can you call Jesus your friend?
Today's Gospel states:'"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. This I command you, to love one another' (John 15:12-17).
Jesus tells us that he loves us so much, and we should love each other the same. He calls us his friends and says that if we love him, we should follow his commands. We are taught to love one another and be servants for the world. If we are friends of Jesus, then we also need to be friends to others, to step out into the world and be disciples, servants to others. Perhaps if your friends are partiers, you be a disciple by keeping them safe, or finding another activity to do together. Maybe you lend an open ear or even start up a conversation about your faith. Are you a true friend?
Today's prayer comes from 'lords-prayer-words' a prayer for a friend:
Lord, I give you (name) and thank you for them. I thank you for everything that they are And for all their gifts and talents. I thank you for the many things that they have given to others And for all the kindness that they have shown me. Lord, at the beginning of time You breathed Your life into creation May you breathe Your life into them now So that each step they take is filled with Your faith Each thought they think is filled with Your hope and each moment they live is filled with Your love. May they fully know Your life And fully live in Your love This day and every day Amen
