Fear of the Lord?

Do you ever find yourself in times where you're afraid? It could be facing a loss, facing heights, maybe a stressful fear. I know for myself, I absolutely dread going to the dentist. It is more of a dread than a fear, as you just know your mouth is going to hurt after. However, what happens after you go to the dentist? You get a fresh cleanliness in your mouth and you are reassured that everything is ok with your mouth, you're being healthy. Do we have the same train of thought when it comes to fear of the Lord, fear of the world around us? It is healthy to have some fear, to keep us in check and to help guide our decisions. However, too much fear prevents us fro living life to the fullest.

Today's Psalm states:'The LORD works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger for ever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor requite us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the LORD pities those who fear him' (Psalms 103:6-13).

God loves us so much that even in our fears He is helping us through. God gives us hope, through Jesus, a hope that we will be happy and see the good in life. God doesn't want us to be afraid. He wants us to love, to be excited by being part of the world, free people with free will to choose and to love. Think about the dentist analogy. You may hate going, detest it in earnest, but you know that in the end, you will be all the better for it, and be happier in the long run. We may fear the future, be stressed about how God is working in us, but we need to move past our fear and face it full on with God by our side. Take some time today and ask God to help you face your fear, whatever it may be.

Today's prayer comes from 'Preach It' a prayer for overcoming fear:

Dear God, I confess that I have allowed fear to control me and that lack of faith is sin. Thank You for Your forgiveness. I recognize that “…You have not given me a spirit of fear but of power and love and discipline.” 1 Timothy 1:7. I renounce any spirit of fear operating in my life and ask You to reveal any and all controlling fears in my life and the lied behind them. I desire to live by faith in You and in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
