God is my Hero
You know how superheroes are considered to be 'king-like' in the comics? They have powers and strength beyond what any ordinary human could dream, and they use those powers to defend the innocent. They protect those weaker than themselves. An example, my favourite superhero, would be Superman, defending the humans against aliens and tormentors such as Lex Luthor using his speed, strength, flight and other powers. People uphold heroes as symbols of hope, as they can trust in them to protect them, keep them safe and bring hope for a better life. Is God not a hero for us?
Today's first reading states: 'Then Moses said to God, "If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, `What is his name?' what shall I say to them?" God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, `I AM has sent me to you.'" God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, `The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you': this is my name for ever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, `The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt; and I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt, to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Per'izzites, the Hivites, and the Jeb'usites, a land flowing with milk and honey."' And they will hearken to your voice; and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, `The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, we pray you, let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.' I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless compelled by a mighty hand. So I will stretch out my hand and smite Egypt with all the wonders which I will do in it; after that he will let you go' (Exodus 3:13-20).
God sends Moses to help His people, to deliver them from Pharaoh. God promises that they will be delivered and brought into a land flowing with milk and honey. God tells them that He will stretch out His hand and smite Egypt with wonders. God is even greater than our imaginative 'Superhero' and can do so much more for us, and He does it out of love. God sent Jesus to deliver us from our sin, to redeem the world and bring it to the fulness of life. There could be no greater hero. Take time to thank God for your life today, for being the hero of your life.
Today's prayer comes from 'my life tree; a prayer for God to help us be heroes like Jesus:
Thank you God for sending your son Jesus as an example of your love. And thank you for inviting us to be superheroes on a mission to love boldly and be magnets for you! W e know your love always covers us! Amen.
