Don't Judge a Book by its Cover
Have you heard the saying "don't judge a book by its cover"? It's much easier said than done. Think of the story of Moses, as he meets God in the burning bush, and God tells him to save His people. Most people would think him crazy. I'm sure he had many doubts at the time, of everything that could go wrong as he went to challenge Pharoah. I mean, he was getting his knowledge from a bush. However, Moses had faith that God was leading his destiny. It was a bush on the outside, but through it, God helped form one of the greatest leaders in our faith.
Today's first reading states:'Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Mid'ian; and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and lo, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, "I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt." When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here am I." Then he said, "Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring forth my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt." But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?" He said, "But I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought forth the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain"'(Exodus 3:1-6, 9-12).
How often do we judge a book by it's cover? We look and think that all we see with our own eyes is what is in the world. However, if we look closer at the wonder, the magic that exists, there is no doubt at all that a loving creator must exist. Faith helps us to believe in the impossible, or in what the rest of the world believes to be impossible. Look at Moses. he listens to god speak through a burning bush, and is later able to split the Red Sea. God helps us to do extraordinary things if we just have faith. Don't judge life by the cover, but what's inside.
Today's prayer comes from 'belief net' a prayer for strength in faith:
In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Dear Lord, see me through these hard times. In these troubling times, I am filled with unspeakable fears. I reach out my hand to you now, And ask you to walk besides me. I cannot carry all my burdens, But I know you can, and will. Please walk beside me. Please guide me. Please help me hold on strong, Through the trials and storms. Help me hold on to my faith, In even the darkest hour. Stay with me Lord, And show me Your way. In your love and Holy Spirit I abide. Amen.
