Acting in Love
How often do we try to be seen, to be acknowledged for our efforts? They can be good actions or even bad, acting out because of hurt or rising up to be special. However, that's not how we should proceed, being good and loving Christians. Every act should be done out of love, an act of humility for God, as God has given so much for us. Jesus didn't give himself on the cross to be an idol, to be acknowledged in a fame way. He died as an act of love to save each and every one of us, and to bring us the hope we need to bare our crosses, so to seek and find God in the fullness of this life.
Today's Gospel states:'"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you' (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18).
This Gospel tells us how we should do acts of love, not to be praised by men, but to give all you have, including your actions to God by helping others. This includes prayer as well. W read that we should shut the door, be in quiet, for we do not pray to be seen, but to be with God, to listen to learn, to seek help. If we do acts of good in secret, it is much more beneficial, for what can we truly gain from earthly praise? I try to help others without asking for anything in return, and sometimes they don't recognize that it doesn't need repayment. Try to do acts of service today for those around you in secret, and dedicate it to God, for the rewards from helping others out of love will be greater than you can imagine.
Today's prayer comes from 'CatholicOnline' a prayer for act of love:
O My God, I love you above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because you are all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen.
