Mary Mother of God
Why do we put such great focus on Mary in the Catholic Church? Many others faiths claim it to be idolatry. However, it's not about idolizing, but the goodness of God being shown through Mary, in her acceptance of baring Jesus, the Son of God. Think about the Hail Mary and the words said in the prayer. Mary was so important in the life of Jesus that in the Rosary, we ask for her intercession ten times per decade. Think about the kind of person it would take to be so accepting to God's will, so open to going forward, even though she'd be criticized for her acceptance. We use words like 'holy' and 'full of grace' when talking about our mother in faith because they are what describe her life and her open hands to God, but also what we as people of faith should try to embrace and live up to.
Today's Gospel states:'In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zechari'ah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home' (Luke 1:39-56).
In this Gospel, we hear about the role of Mary and how she was blessed by God. God chose to reveal His son to the world through a simple yet blessed woman, filled with grace, and to this day she is our mother in faith because of her willingness and humble heart. Try to think about times in your life where you've rejected God's will, or times when God hasn't been a part of your decisions. It's part of human nature to sin, to fall from the path. However, Mary was a human just as us. She was blessed by God from birth to bare His Son, Jesus. We too are each blessed with a path, a mission to bring God's goodness to the world and ultimately be redeemed and restored by His grace. All it takes is faith and the openness to accept God's will for us.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer to Mary Mother of God:
Father, source of light in every age, the virgin conceived and bore Your Son Who is called Wonderful God, Prince of Peace. May her prayer, the gift of a mother's love, be Your people's joy through all ages. May her response, born of a humble heart, draw Your Spirit to rest on Your people. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
