Peace be with You
What is peace? Google gives the definition that it is "freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility" or also "freedom from or the cessation of war or violence". Notice that it starts with freedom, the free choice of seeking and finding peace. The next part is ceasing war, violence, fighting and disturbance. You know how in the Star Wars movies they say "use the force" and "may the force be with you"? This, in a way, helps us grasp what eace is within Catholicism, the freedom for seeking true grace, true happiness. It is to be guided by the Holy Spirit in all we do and to try finding happiness through helping others and living in the teachings of Jesus.
Today's Gospel states: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, `I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go hence" (John 14:27-31).
In the mass, we receive peace and also give peace, signifying what we are to do in every area of our lives. As we receive the Eucharist, we are given the grace, and love of God, so to be strengthened in order to give this grace and love to others as disciples in faith. In this Gospel, Jesus tells is how important this exchange of peace is, as it is not only connected with him, but with God the Father as well, a tradition which connects us to one another and to God. Whether it be through giving someone peace of mind through words of wisdom or praying for them to be given God's grace, take time today to give peace to someone who needs God's love.
Today's prayer comes from 'Catholic Online' a prayer for peace:
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who said to Your Apostles: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you," regard not my sins but the faith of Your Church, and deign to give her peace and unity according to Your Will: Who live and reign, God, world without end. Amen.
