You know the feeling when a song comes on the radio, and the words just seem to speak right to your soul, to your heart? I like to think of the phrase 'everything happens for a reason' especially when the perfect song comes on, speaking my feelings aloud in a way I could never put into words. If you've just gone on a great night out with a spouse or date, love songs seem to help bring out the joy in the heart. The same type of feeling can be found when God speaks to us and we truly take the time to listen.
Today's first reading states:"The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by morning he wakens, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up" (Isaiah 50:4-9).
God speaks to is in many ways, in everything that we do, every person who we communicate with. This reading speaks about how God opens our ears, in every moment of the day, from waking up, to situations of conflict. God guides us so to help us, to give us confidence and so not to hide away in shame. In order to hear God speaking to us, we need to embrace life, to take chances and open ourself up to the world. In order to hear God speaking, we need to take time for prayer, and silence, so to truly be listening and focussing on God's will for us. Take time today to listen for God in your life, reflect on the guidance you've received.
Today's prayer comes from 'Signs, wonders and miracles' a prayer of Mother Theresa:
Dear Jesus, help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go. Flood our souls with your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of yours. Shine through us and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus. Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be light to others. The light, O Jesus, will be all from you. None of it will be ours. It will be you shining on others through us. Let us thus praise you in the way you love best by shining on those around us. Let us preach you without preaching, not by words, but by our example; by the catching force - the sympathetic influence of what we do, the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to you. Amen.
